Contest Guidelines
All information is collected in the United States, and the use of any personally identifiable information is subject to the terms set forth in the Microsoft Statement of Privacy. By entering this Contest, you are agreeing to abide by the official rules written below. If you do not agree to abide by these rules, please do not enter this contest.
Contest Description
This competition was designed to recognize students who demonstrate excellence in a diverse range of technical and artistic pursuits, and seeks innovative contest entries that address the competition theme.
Entry deadlines and other important dates
Registration opens for all inviationals: November 1, 2005
Registration closing dates and other competition-specific deadlines vary by category. Please review the contest details in order to ensure that you don't miss a deadline for the contest(s) you wish to participate in.
Estimated dates for worldwide finals are: July 28-August 1, 2006 Worldwide finals will take place in Delhi, India
* Please Note: The dates in these rules are subject to change at the sole discretion of Microsoft. Therefore, the winner must have a flexible schedule.
Who can enter?
You are eligible to enter any category if you are 16 years of age or older at the time of entry, and are actively enrolled as a student at an accredited educational institution that grants high-school or college/university (or equivalent) degrees. However, the minimum age limit may vary for specific countries.
Who can't enter?
There are three groups of people who are ineligible to enter:
If you are an employee of Microsoft Corporation (the Sponsor), or an employee of a Microsoft subsidiary, prize supplier, advertising or promotion agency, or any other company that is involved in the execution of this contest at the time of entry, you are not allowed to enter or win prizes. Microsoft interns and campus representatives (such as Student Ambassadors, Student Champs) who have eligible student status may enter, but they are prohibited from using Microsoft property or resources in the creation or execution of their entry. This would include, but is not limited to, Microsoft networks, Microsoft hardware tools and technology resources, or the counsel of Microsoft employees. If you are an immediate family member of (parent, sibling, spouse, child) or living in the same household as any person described in group 1 above at the time of entry, you are not allowed to enter or win prizes. If you have won the world wide final of the invitational that you are entering in a previous Imagine Cup you are ineligible to enter this particular invitational again but may compete in other invitationals.
Teams and Individuals may enter
Each invitational will be designated Team or Individual. For team competitions the maximum team size ranges from 2-4 individuals, depending on the category. Teammates do not need to be from the same school. You may not compete on multiple teams in the same category, however you may compete on different teams in different categories.
How many entries can you submit?
Each team/individual may submit one entry per invitational except in the Short Film, and Designer invitationals. If a team/individual ineligibly submits multiple entries in a single invitational, the first entry received will be considered official, and the subsequent entries disqualified.
Invitationals
There are six individual entry categories ("Invitationals"). Each is designed to test a unique skill. For a description of each Invitational, their entry requirements and unique judging criteria, see the Competition Details.
Verification
Students who advance to the second round of any invitational must complete a student verification process in order to compete in the second round. General standards for entries The actual entry may be localized in any language, however, the verbal presentations and supporting entry materials must be presented in English. Translators will be permitted if needed for oral presentations.
Teams/individuals must have created the entries themselves, and the right to submit it must not be restricted in any way. The entry cannot defame or invade publicity rights or privacy of any person, living or deceased, or otherwise infringe upon any person¡¯s personal or proprietary rights.
The content must be acceptable for all viewing audiences; any material containing text, sound or images that the judges, in their sole opinion, find vulgar, offensive, or inappropriate for public viewing for any reason will be automatically disqualified.
If an entry includes elements not owned by yourself or the team, you must be able to provide, if requested, a legal release for the use, in a form satisfactory to judges. If this is the case and your entry is selected as a winner, you may be requires to provide a Release from the third party permitting distribution of your entry.
If qualified, each team must send at least one person to compete at the worldwide finals as a guest of Microsoft. If no team member can attend, the next highest scoring team will be invited to compete instead. Prize Conditions
All prizes will be awarded, provided a qualified number of entries are received in each category. No substitution or transfer of prize permitted, except by the Sponsor, who reserves the right to award a prize of equal or greater value if advertised prize is unavailable.
If a winner cannot or will not accept a prize, then the prize will be forfeited and awarded to the next highest scoring entry.
All prizes are stated in US dollars. Cash prizes will be paid out by the Microsoft subsidiary in the winners' country of residence, in the currency of that country (based on the current exchange rate on the date of payment, which will be no later than 60 days following prize announcement).
Taxes, if any, are the sole responsibility of the winner(s). Cash prizes will be awarded in equal portions to team members listed on the contest application, no exceptions will be allowed. Microsoft is not responsible for any dispute arising regarding prize dispersal.
Travel Prize Conditions
Worldwide finalists will be awarded a travel prize to ensure their attendance at the worldwide finals competition. Specifics of prize package are subject to availability and sponsor's sole discretion. Entrants are solely responsible for obtaining any and all travel documentation (including but not limited to a valid passport and any required travel Visas) necessary for international travel. If the Imagine Cup Finals are cancelled for any reason, Microsoft shall have no other obligation to the winners other than to provide the stated prize minus the opportunity to compete in the Finals.
Travel prize includes round trip coach airfare for winners from major airport closest to winner's home; hotel accommodations, and select meals during the event. Actual value depends on date/time/destination, and difference between actual value and stated value will not be awarded. If the winner resides within 250 miles of the location of the worldwide finals, Microsoft reserves the right to provide alternative means of transportation to and from destination.
Event dates and location subject to change at the sole discretion of Microsoft. Any team containing a student that has not reached the age of majority in their country/state of residence must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, who will also travel as a guest of Microsoft.
Any expenses not explicitly listed herein, are the sole responsibility of the winner. No cancellation of reservation or transfer of reservation to another date after reservation has been made. If The Imagine Cup Finals is canceled, for any reason, the Sponsor shall have no further obligation to the winner and guest other than to supply the stated prize minus the opportunity to attend the Finals. Travel must be completed on dates specified by sponsor or prize will be forfeited and awarded to an alternate winner. Winners (Parent/Guardian if winner is a minor) and travel companions must sign & return a release of liability, and where legal, a publicity release before any travel prize is delivered to winner. Please Note: The dates for the trip are subject to change at the sole discretion of Microsoft. Therefore, the winner must have flexible travel plans.
By accepting a prize, you must agree to the following
Participate in promotional events which could include, but are not limited to, having your entry showcased on stage at industry events, and allow Microsoft to use your name, trademarks, image, comments and/or company logos on presentation slides and other Imagine Cup marketing materials.
You agree to assist Microsoft in the creation of case studies or white papers (together "Studies") detailing participant's application. This documentation may take various forms, including a videotape and on-line article. These Studies will not include any participant confidential information. Upon your approval of the studies accuracy, you agree to give Microsoft permission to display the studies including trademarks, logos and other identifying information contained therein, on Microsoft's Internet sites and in printed form.
Also, by entering you agree that Microsoft shall be free to use for any purpose the residuals resulting from access to or work with your Application. The term "residuals" means information in intangible form, which is retained in memory by persons who have had access to the Applications, including ideas, concepts, know-how, or techniques contained within.
By entering you agree that Microsoft will not have any obligation to limit or restrict the assignment of such persons or to pay royalties for any work resulting from the use of residuals.
Rights to use entries
Microsoft is not claiming any license under your copyrights or patents. By entering, however, you are granting to Microsoft and an irrevocable, royalty free, fully paid up, worldwide license to use, review, assess, test and otherwise analyze your entry and all its content in connection with this Contest. Also by entering, you¡¯re giving Microsoft permission to feature your entry and any associated materials any medium including, but not limited to, website, television, radio and/or printed materials to promote this Contest and Microsoft products. You will not receive any compensation or credit for use of your entry, other than what is described in these rules.
General Conditions
The decision of the judges is final and binding in all matters related to this contest. By entering, you agree to abide by the terms of these Official Rules and understand that the laws of the United States govern this Contest. All federal, provincial, state, and local laws and regulations apply.
By entering, you agree, where legally permitted, to release and hold harmless Microsoft Corporation and its respective subsidiaries, affiliates, advertising and promotions agencies, prize suppliers, and all of their employees, officers, directors, shareholder's and agents (collectively, "Releasees") from any and all liability or any injuries, loss or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with this Contest, the use of any entry, or the acceptance or use of any prize won, except where prohibited by law.
Limitations of Liability
Releasees assume no responsibility for lost, late, illegible, garbled or misdirected entries, or for any computer, online, telephone, human, or other error or for any technical or other malfunctions that may occur including any injury or damage to your or any other person's computer relating to or resulting from participation in this Contest or downloading any materials in this Contest.
If for any reason this contest is not capable of running as planned due to infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, uploads of malicious files or viruses, or any other causes beyond the control of Microsoft Corporation which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Contest, Microsoft Corporation reserves the right at its sole discretion, to disqualify any entry or any individual who tampers with the entry or judging process, and to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the Contest and select winners using all eligible, non-suspect entries received as of the date of termination. Releasees assume no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft or destruction or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, entries.
Conduct
Microsoft reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify an individual it finds to be tampering with the type, process or the operation of the contest or web site, to be acting in violation of the Official Rules or in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner or with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person.
CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT BY A COMPETITOR OR ANY OTHER INDIVIDUAL TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEBSITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE CONTEST IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS AND SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, MICROSOFT RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES FROM ANY SUCH CONTESTANT TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW. Winners List Winners will be announced within 30 days following the worldwide finals.
